DVSA Earned Recognition launches TfL module to support road safety
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) flagship earned recognition scheme has been accredited by Transport for London (TfL) and helps member operators bid for TfL contracts.
A newly launched ‘TfL’ earned recognition module will allow accredited operators access to commercial opportunities which may include construction, logistics, freight, and passenger transport.
The module also provides TfL with access to a greater pool of compliant and safe vehicles operators when awarding contracts.
It provides operators with a choice of membership schemes to compete for opportunities.
DVSA earned recognition is a voluntary and free to join compliance scheme. It helps operators demonstrate to DVSA and their contractors and customers that they meet driver and vehicle standards.
Operators have approved reporting systems that share a summary of performance data with the DVSA team. If the team identify any concerns within this data they will support the member operator to fix.
This transparent relationship allows DVSA to have confidence in the safety of earned recognition members’ operations enabling enforcement resources to be targeted on non-compliant operators who pose the greatest risk to road safety.
The TfL module forms part of the requirements to meet compliance with TfL’s Work Related Road Risk (WRRR) contract clause. The module is optional, and in addition to the recently updated audit standards that operators need to demonstrate to qualify for earned recognition.
Updates were made to the scheme’s audit process in June 2022, to help operators demonstrate policies covering the highest standards of road safety, well-being, environmental and community protection.
Around 10% of the UK’s national heavy vehicle fleet now has earned recognition accreditation and meets these driver and vehicle standards. Over half (52.2%) of whom have 100 or fewer vehicles and a number have only one, highlighting accessibility to the scheme for vehicle operators of all sizes.
The TfL module further demonstrates how meeting the standard can unlock a growing list of commercial benefits while improving road safety across Britain.
Growing Confidence
DVSA’s Chief Executive Loveday Ryder, said: “We are delighted to work with TfL as part of the earned recognition scheme.

“Ultimately, our focus at DVSA is road safety, and we hope that this announcement will give greater incentive for operators to aspire to be exemplary and be among the safest within industry.”
